The most controversial issue regarding pets and pregnant women is cats and in particular the risk of tocoplasmosis associated with these animals. However, this is a myth that has been repeated for many years. Infection with toxoplasmosis occurs through contact with cat faeces or contaminated raw vegetables or fruit. Therefore, expectant mothers are advised to always wash raw vegetables and fruits thoroughly, not to use the same cutting board for meat and vegetables, and to clean the litter box with gloves. You can also transfer this task to other household members during these nine months. Toxoplasmosis in pregnancy, especially if it occurs in the first trimester, carries the risk of complications in the child that can lead to mental retardation, visual or hearing impairment.

Pregnancy and pets

While waiting for the baby to be born, it is advisable to give the pet a thorough veterinary examination and check that the rabies vaccination is up to date. Expectant parents should also familiarise the pet with the newborn by inviting friends with children to their home. If the dog or cat sleeps in bed with household members, it should be taught to sleep separately in case it does not accept the baby and has to sleep outside the bed. Many people make it a habit to take the newborn's clothes home with them after birth so that the animal becomes familiar with the baby's smell and the baby is not a stranger to it when it comes home from the hospital.

Pets and the newborn

Paediatricians point out the benefits of pets. It is believed that children who grow up with dogs are less likely to suffer from allergies and bronchial asthma. They are also more resistant to various types of microorganisms. However, the influence of animals on the intellectual and spiritual development of the child is important. From the very first days, a bond is formed between the child and the animal. It is also believed that children who have animals in the house are more responsible and sensitive. However, beware of breeds, especially dogs, that are aggressive or react badly to children. They can be particularly threatening if there is a new addition to the household and they are not prepared or used to it.
