Usually, the pain starts in the umbilical area and moves to the right iliac fossa. In the advanced stages of pregnancy, the location of the pain in appendicitis changes due to the considerable size of the uterus, which alters the position of other organs in the abdominal cavity. Quick diagnosis can be much more difficult in this situation. Towards the end of pregnancy, the umbilicus becomes bulging in many expectant mothers, which can also cause discomfort and unpleasant pain.

Another possible cause of umbilical pain during pregnancy is an umbilical hernia. It is usually the result of weakening of the tissue that makes up the abdominal wall. The pain may also be accompanied by vomiting. In this case, a visit to the hospital is required to remove the hernia. In most cases, surgeons are able to accomplish this without surgery. However, if the hernia is incarcerated, surgery may be required.

If the pain in the umbilical area is mild, there are no other symptoms, and the pregnant woman suspects that it is caused by the growing uterus and stretching of the abdominal skin, there is no need to see a doctor or go to the hospital. On the other hand, if the pain in the umbilical area is strong and accompanied by fever, vomiting or other disturbing symptoms, a visit to the emergency room is necessary. In such a situation, diagnostics are performed in the form of ultrasound or laboratory tests. The doctor also examines the pregnant woman, including for the presence of peritoneal symptoms. Treatment depends on the particular cause. If the cause is an umbilical hernia, it is sometimes possible to drain the hernia, which leads to a regression of symptoms. If the cause of the umbilical pain is appendicitis, appendectomy is required.

Umbilical pain in pregnancy - when to go to the doctor?

Painful outbreaks during pregnancy are not always an indication for an urgent visit to the doctor or hospital. However, it is worth watching for alarming symptoms to determine when it is time to visit the emergency room. These include:

• Fever > 38 degrees
• Pain that is not relieved by painkillers
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Flatulence and bowel movements

It is also advisable to see a doctor if the pain gets worse over time. Symptoms should not be underestimated, as many diseases have uncharacteristic symptoms during pregnancy. If symptoms are troubling, it is advisable to see your doctor, who may refer you to the hospital for further diagnostics.
