What is Zinnat?

Zinnat is the trade name of a drug containing the antibiotic cefuroxime. This compound is classified as a 2nd generation cephalosporin. They are beta-lactam antibiotics that kill bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. Cefuroxime is effective against both Gram-positive bacteria, such as streptococci, and Gram-negative bacteria, which include Escherichia coli.  Zinnate, on the other hand, is not effective against atypical bacteria such as mycoplasmas because they do not have a cell wall.

Cefuroxime has a relatively broad spectrum of activity. It is therefore used for the following purposes, among others:

  • Infections of the respiratory organs
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Middle ear infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Is Zinnat safe to use during pregnancy?

Zinnate, and in particular cefuroxime, is classified as category B with regard to its safety for use in pregnancy. This means that no control studies have been conducted in humans, but animal studies have shown no potentially harmful effects on the developing fetus. Since medical experimentation on pregnant women is prohibited, Category B is the safest category of medication. Therefore, Zinnat is used in pregnant women when there is an indication for antibiotic therapy and a potential clinical benefit from the use of a cephalosporin drug.

What should be considered during antibiotic therapy?

Antibiotics are a group of drugs that should be used only in certain clinical situations. Its use is associated with various possible complications and weakening of the organism. For this reason, when using zinnate and other antibiotics during pregnancy, some rules should be followed:

  • When taking an antibiotic, always take an oral and vaginal probiotic at the same time to ensure that the bacterial flora of the gut and vagina are rebuilt.
  • Always take the antibiotic as prescribed by your doctor. Do not discontinue the antibiotic prematurely if the health condition improves, otherwise there is a risk of developing bacterial strains that are resistant to the antibiotic in question.
  • Never use an antibiotic on your own without first consulting your doctor.

It is important to remember that high fever or untreated urinary tract infection can have serious consequences for the course of pregnancy. Therefore, safe antibiotics should not be refused if there are indications for their use.
